Artist statement

*AFTERIMAGE (n): a visual illusion in which retinal impressions persist after the removal of a stimulus, believed to be caused by the continued activation of the visual system.

Afterimage* is a collaborative project from Maura Ford and Bekah Malover. Through poetry and design, it explores modern day distortions of identity building and self expression.

Astrological signs and personality quizzes have become tantamount to identity. Using these frameworks to self-identify creates new layers of ambiguity, often rendering our public persona as half-baked or inauthentic.

Afterimage is arch, confident and self-conscious at once, and ultimately concerned with what gets lost in translation between the interior and exterior self.
